Often patients stop their medication as they can no longer afford the high cost of a regime of several drugs. This then leads to drug resistance, which then requires a larger cocktail of drugs. Additionally, MDR-TB patients are not treated adequately under government TB programs, as their treatment is too costly and complicated.

It costs a MDR-TB patient on average Rs 12,000 for ONE month of medicine, which has to be taken for duration of 18-24 months
